Reclaim SOL from Memecoins: The SOL Your Trades Left Behind

Every memecoin you buy opens a token account with a SOL deposit, and selling doesn't close it. Here's how much active traders leave behind and how to get it back.

SOLclaimer TeamUpdated 8 min read

If you trade memecoins, you can reclaim SOL from memecoins you sold weeks or months ago. Every new token you buy opens a token account funded with a refundable SOL deposit, and selling 100% of the coin leaves that account open and empty. Close those accounts and the deposits come back to your wallet.

Key takeaways

  • Buying a token you don't already hold usually creates an Associated Token Account (ATA), and that account holds a rent deposit paid from your SOL.
  • Selling your whole position empties the account but doesn't close it, so the deposit stays locked.
  • Accounts opened before September 2026 hold 0.00203928 SOL each. Accounts opened since September 11, 2026 hold 0.00148844 SOL.
  • An active trader can pile up thousands of these accounts in a year, spread across main, burner and bot wallets.
  • Leftover dust blocks closing. SOLclaimer only closes accounts holding exactly zero tokens.

Why memecoin trading leaves SOL behind

On Solana, tokens don't sit directly on your wallet address. Each token you hold lives in its own token account, and the standard one for a given wallet and token is called the Associated Token Account. Every token account has to hold a rent-exempt deposit, paid in SOL when the account is created.

So when you buy a coin you've never held, part of what leaves your wallet is a deposit for the new account. It's easy to miss, because it comes out of your SOL balance in the same transaction as the swap.

The catch comes when you sell. Selling 100% of a token empties the account, but the account itself stays open. The deposit is still inside, and it stays there until the account is closed and the lamports are sent back to you.

That deposit isn't a fee, and it isn't gone. It's your SOL, parked. Our explainer on Solana rent and rent-exempt deposits covers the mechanics in more detail.

Where memecoin token accounts come from

It doesn't really matter where you trade. The token account lives on the blockchain, not inside the app you used, so every route into a new token leaves one behind:

  • Launchpads like pump.fun. Buying a new token creates a token account for it in your wallet.
  • DEX aggregators. Swapping into a token you don't hold opens an account for it in exactly the same way.
  • Telegram trading bots. A bot can buy into far more new tokens than you would by hand, and each new token means a new account in the bot's wallet.

Buying a token you still have an open account for reuses that account. The deposits stack up when you keep moving into fresh coins, which is exactly what memecoin trading looks like.

How much SOL can you reclaim from memecoins?

The math is simple: the number of empty accounts times the deposit each one holds. What makes it add up for traders is volume.

Take an illustrative trader who buys 50 new coins a week and fully exits each one. Over a year, that's 2,600 token accounts. At the legacy deposit of 0.00203928 SOL, those accounts hold about 5.30 SOL. After SOLclaimer's 0.5% fee, about 5.28 SOL comes back to the wallet.

Here's the same calculation at a few trading paces. It assumes a 52-week year, every coin sold to zero, and no reused accounts.

New coins per week Accounts after one year At legacy deposit (0.00203928 SOL) At current minimum (0.00148844 SOL)
10 520 ~1.060 SOL ~0.774 SOL
25 1,300 ~2.651 SOL ~1.935 SOL
50 2,600 ~5.302 SOL ~3.870 SOL
100 5,200 ~10.604 SOL ~7.740 SOL

These are totals before the 0.5% fee. Multiply by 0.995 to see what you keep. These are illustrations, not predictions. Your real number depends on how many coins you've traded and when you opened each account.

Why there are two columns

Solana's rent reduction under SIMD-0437 is cutting the minimum deposit in steps. Step 1 went live on mainnet on September 3, 2026, and step 2 on September 11, 2026, bringing a new token account down to 0.00148844 SOL. Further steps are expected with Agave 4.4 around November 2026, which would take the minimum for new accounts to about 0.000203928 SOL. Our breakdown of the 2026 rent reduction covers the full schedule.

Existing accounts keep their original deposit, and closing one returns its full balance. So if you've been trading memecoins for a year or more, most of your empty accounts were opened at the legacy rate, and those are the most valuable ones to close. For more examples by account count, see our rent calculator and examples.

Closing is cheap. The network fee is 5,000 lamports (0.000005 SOL) base per transaction plus a tiny priority fee, and many CloseAccount instructions are batched into each transaction.

Bot and burner wallets add up fast

Plenty of traders don't stick to one wallet. There's the main wallet, a burner or two for fresh launches, and the wallets attached to trading bots. Each of them has its own token accounts and its own pile of empty ones.

Bot wallets can collect the most, simply because a bot can buy into new tokens much faster than you can. Selling out through the bot doesn't close the account any more than selling by hand does.

Here's how to cover all of them:

  • Make a list of every address you've traded from, including old burners you've stopped using.
  • Scan each one on SOLclaimer. Scanning is read-only and works without connecting a wallet, so you can check any address.
  • To claim, connect the same wallet that owns the accounts. Closing needs the owner's signature.

If a bot wallet only exists inside the bot, check whether the bot lets you export it to a wallet app such as Phantom, Solflare or Backpack. Only import a private key into a wallet app you trust, never into a website. Our guide on whether it's safe to claim SOL covers what a legitimate claim transaction should look like.

Dust balances: why some memecoin accounts won't close

Not every coin you think you sold is actually at zero. A sell can leave a tiny remainder behind, or more of a token can land in your wallet after you've exited. That leftover is dust, and it matters, because a token account can only be closed when its balance is exactly zero.

SOLclaimer only closes zero-balance accounts. It doesn't sell or burn tokens, so accounts holding dust won't appear in your closable list. To free those deposits:

  • Sell the remaining amount, if there's still a market for it.
  • Burn the dust, if your wallet offers a burn option.
  • Rescan, and the account will show up as closable.

Sometimes the dust is worth less than the deposit locked underneath it, which is worth keeping in mind when you decide what to clean up. Dust isn't the only blocker, either. Frozen accounts and some Token-2022 accounts can't be closed even when empty, and our post on why some token accounts can't be closed walks through each case.

How to claim SOL after trading

Once you know which wallets to check, the claim itself takes a few minutes:

  1. Open the claim tool and claim your SOL.
  2. Paste an address to scan read-only, or connect Phantom, Solflare, Backpack or another Wallet Standard wallet.
  3. SOLclaimer scans both the SPL Token program and Token-2022, lists every empty account, and labels the ones it has to skip, such as frozen accounts or Token-2022 accounts with a close authority that isn't you.
  4. Review the total, then approve in your wallet. Each transaction contains ComputeBudget, CloseAccount instructions with your own wallet as the destination, and the 0.5% fee transfer. Nothing else.
  5. Check each signature on Solscan.

Transactions are limited to 1,232 bytes, so a cleanup of thousands of accounts is split across many transactions. Each one is built in your browser and simulated by your wallet before you sign.

Make reclaiming a monthly habit

The empty accounts come back as fast as you trade. A monthly cleanup keeps the pile small and gets your SOL back while you still remember which wallets you used.

A simple routine:

  • Pick a fixed day each month, like the first.
  • Scan your main wallet, every burner and every bot wallet.
  • Sell or burn dust on coins you've fully exited, so those accounts are closable next time.
  • Claim, then confirm the signatures on Solscan.

Keep in mind that new accounts will hold less once the remaining rent-reduction steps land, so each fresh account will return less than the ones you opened before September 2026. That makes your oldest empty accounts the priority, and there's no reason to leave them sitting there. The official Solana page on reduced rent tracks the rollout.

Frequently asked questions

Does selling a memecoin close its token account?

No. Selling 100% of a token leaves its token account open with a zero balance, and the SOL deposit stays inside until the account is closed.

How much SOL is in each memecoin token account?

Accounts opened before September 2026 hold 0.00203928 SOL. Accounts opened between September 3 and 11, 2026 hold about 0.00185557 SOL, and accounts opened since September 11 hold 0.00148844 SOL.

Can I reclaim SOL from a trading bot wallet?

Yes, if you can connect that wallet through a supported wallet app such as Phantom, Solflare or Backpack. You can scan the bot wallet's address read-only first to see how many empty accounts it has.

Can I buy a token again after closing its account?

Yes. If you buy it again later, a new token account is created with a fresh deposit at whatever the rate is at that time.

Why don't some of my sold coins show up as closable?

If an account isn't listed at all, it still holds some tokens, even a tiny dust amount. Sell or burn the remainder and scan again. Frozen accounts and restricted Token-2022 accounts are listed separately with a label explaining why they're skipped.
